
Horse Speak - Stories from a Farrier
"Just One Fly" continued...
.....I stood there puzzled and watched her head in to bring out the rest of the horses, not knowing she was about to punctuate her profound horse knowledge with an act of cross species conversation. I guess I was amazed and a little proud already, that a young lady of her age could be blessed with such unique talent.
.....“Hold the gate open for me will you?” she asked. “I’m going to send the rest of the horses out one at a time and you can close the gate behind each one to keep them in the pasture.”
.....Simple enough I thought, and lo and behold the horses began coming from the barn one at a time in single file down the walkway and through the gate I was holding. I merely had to watch to make sure they didn’t turn around and come back through. They kept coming, tall beautiful creatures, each of them, different shapes and colors, some long, some chubby, but all beautiful. About twenty in all, going out for the evening to graze in the pasture, steadily chewing the night away.
.....When I saw the last ones coming out through the barn door, I realized I was looking at a large mare and her new wobbly foal. The foal was in the lead, unsteady and unsure, being softly nudged forward by his mother’s soft white nose. Then the little guy saw a shadow across the...
